Tullyvin Musical Society host Roaring 20s event

The roaring twenties was a time of technological, cultural and social progress and, although there was a faltering start to the one that followed 100 years later, the members of Tullyvin Musical Society are looking to emulate the style.

The musical drama group is putting together an evening of entertainment that embraces the past and looks to the future. Tullyvin Community Center, Cavan, will be transformed into a vibrant scene from the 1920s, as Tullyvin Musical Society opens its doors to the ‘End of Prohibition’ – Roaring 20s event.

Since its formation in October 2015, the group has been making quite an impression on the musical drama scene. They were nominated for an Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) award within its first couple of years.

Pamela McCormack is the chairperson of Tullyvin Musical Society and tells why they chose the 1920s as inspiration for the fundraiser: “A couple of years ago, before Covid, we were thinking of a fundraiser. With the turning of the 2020s, we thought it would be a great theme for a party. We saw vintage expert and stylist, Pearl Dickinson, ran one in Shercock. One of our members was at it and said it was a great idea, so we started to work on our ‘End of Prohibition’ evening. “

The lucky guests will be treated to a night of glitz and glam from the moment they enter the hall. The 1920s’ theme will start with the jazz music of the ‘Cotton Club Quartet’ and singer Aoife Shalvey. There will be a full bar with a selection of carefully chosen cocktails. Philip Mooney DJ will take to the decks from 11pm to help you dance; hop or swing the night away.

Prize for best dressed

Pamela says the dress up part of the evening is optional: “If you want, you can dress up in period costume and there will be a prize on the night for the best dressed. You don’t have to if you don’t want to. Many of our members have got kitted out. It’s nice to have a reason to get dressed up. “

The event is a night of nostalgia, paying homage to the style, sounds and stories of the 1920s. “After such challenging times for everyone, the committee and members want to offer a night of relaxation and a really enjoyable event,” Pamela said.

‘The Addams Family’

Tullyvin Musical Society is also in the process of arranging this year’s show ‘The Addams Family’. Group PRO, Gemma Kettle, said: “Tullyvin Musical Society is honored to be bringing this show to the stage in Tullyvin Hall for an amazing four-night run including, for the first time ever, a matinee performance on the Saturday.

“It will be an ambitious production and promises to be bigger and better than the previous four musicals with a larger creative team coming on board and more focus required on costuming, hair and make-up. The staging will be a mammoth task with many sets needing to be designed and built. Auditions for the show will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2-4pm in Tullyvin Hall. New members are always welcome and there is a role for everyone, either onstage, backstage or in constructing the stage, ”Gemma said.

The funds raised by the ‘End of Prohibition’ – Roaring 20s event will go towards staging this year’s musical production. Tickets for the roaring 20s event are € 15 each and, by purchasing a ticket, you are directly supporting Tullyvin Musical Society and helping to ensure that it can continue to bring the Arts and musical theater to the small rural community.
