The dream of many Londoners is to be within easy reach of London but somewhere that doesn’t feel like it’s near London. In this respect, the charming ‘village’ of Lower Sunbury couldn’t be a more perfect choice, whether for a staycation or the big move.
Located just beyond Twickenham, Lower Sunbury is part of Sunbury-on-Thames, a commuter town in Surrey that can be reached from Central London in only 50 minutes. The upper and middle part of the town is more built up, including not only a number of high-rises but also the M3 Motorway running right through it.
However, the lower half is situated on the River Thames and boasts a much more quiet, village feel. In fact, the charming waterfront spot has even been nicknamed ‘Sunbury Village’.
Here you’ll find many of the markers of an actual village, from green spaces like Sunbury Park to picturesque chapel or peaceful old graveyard such as St Mary’s Church – which is in a particularly scenic riverside spot – and Sunbury Cemetery. Lower Sunbury also boasts its own High Street that’s packed with adorable independent shops and cafes.
A number of quaint, traditional pubs such as Three Fishes or The Magpie join these other pretty establishments in Lower Sunbury’s picturesque streets. The Magpie is right on the River Thames with a riverside terrace where you can enjoy summertime drinks or Sunday lunch.
Or if you want some more variety, there’s also Cafe Capriccio for delicious pizzas, pastas and other Italian delicacies, or Indian Zest for fresh, authentic curries and sharing platters. Both are extremely well-rated on Tripadvisor, ranking as the top two restaurants in Sunbury.
As for things to do, a visit to Sunbury Park’s Walled Garden followed by The Sunbury Embroidery Gallery and cafe comes recommended by Tripadvisor users. Time your trip right and you can also go to one of the bi-monthly Sunbury Antiques Markets, held at nearby Kempton Park.
There’s also the annual regatta and fair, held every year during August. In 2022, the Sunbury Regatta will be held on Saturday August 13.
If you want to stay in Lower Sunbury, The Flower Pot Hotel is a pretty spot only a stone’s throw away from the riverfront that’s equal parts charming and quirky. Past guests particularly liked the rooms located in the rafters, which have. Plus, there’s a pub and bar onsite where you can have a fresh cooked breakfast or fabulous Sunday roast.
