Ten Hag passed on chance to sign £88m star ready to take Chelsea to next level

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly waved away the opportunity to sign a Chelsea new boy ready to bring around a huge revival at Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils boss has undergone what has been a modest January spend so far. Indeed, after being allowed to spend well over £200m in the summer window, Ten Hag has managed to only make minor adjustments to his squad.

And it’s been very much a case of two in, two out for Ten Hag with Jack Butland and Wout Weghorst filling the voids vacated by Martin Dubravka and Cristiano Ronaldo.

To that end, United are expected to keep their powder very much dry until the summer window. That said, Sunday’s Transfer Gossip has unearthed the possibility of a big-name Juventus star arriving before January’s window shuts.

Were that to happen, Ten Hag would be finding a solution to one major issue he wants a long-term fix for.

However, it is fair to say that, despite the £220m already spent since he took charge, Ten Hag has been relatively careful with the money he has spent.

Granted, both Lisandro Martinez and Antony both cost more than initially expected from his previous club, Ajax. Pushing them for every last penny, Ten Hag will have been delighted to get the backing needed to finalize both deals.

That methodical approach to cash has arguably been the polar opposite at Chelsea.

Under new co-owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea have spent money like it’s going out of fashion. A near £280m summer outlay has been followed by another £160m January outlay.

And with six new players already arriving this month, Graham Potter has some work to do to find the right combination at Chelsea.

Man Utd passed on chance to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk

The most expensive new arrival in at Chelsea this month has been Mykhaylo Mudryk.

The Ukrainian star moved to Stamford Bridge after they sneaked past Arsenal to his signature land. And the Blues are paying an initial £62m to Shakhtar Donetsk, with the final fee potentially topping £88m with add-ons.

His move to west London, as opposed to the Gunners, certainly hurt for Arsenal. And the bitterness at seeing Mudryk sign for Chelsea has best been illustrated by Ian Wright, who has revealed who will suffer most from the transfer.

However, the Daily Mirror has now revealed Ten Hag and Man Utd also passed up on the chance to sign Mudryk.

The report claims Ten Hag was offered the chance to bring in the Ukrainian in the early days of January. However, while Ten Hag is an admirer of his talents, the United boss waved away the opportunity. And the main reason being is that Ten Hag feels United are already extremely well off for wide attacking talent.

Furthermore, the United boss is keen to offer more chances to talented teen Alejandro Garnacho. And he fears the capture of Mudryk may well have limited the Argentine’s opportunities.

That seemingly left Arsenal in the driving seat to secure his signing; however, it was Chelsea who beat them to the punch.

Plaudits quickly arriving for Mudryk

Mudryk certainly looks an exciting addition to the Premier League, becoming the second Ukrainian to play for Chelsea.

A fleet-footed and goal-hungry star, he certainly caught the eye on his debut for Chelsea at Liverpool on Sunday.

And plenty already believe he could prove the difference maker for Chelsea and be the man to save their season.

Mudryk – a 55th-minute substitute at Anfield on Saturday – certainly caught the eye after stepping off the bench.

Making a BT Sport trio lose their mindshe was quickly compared to a Dutch great.

“I’d be extremely excited if I was a Chelsea fan about the new man Mudryk,” Steven Gerrard said.

“I thought that was a very strong cameo and if he’s not [fully] fit and there’s still more to come in that department. He looks the real deal.

“Some of his clips today were outstanding. He reminded me a little bit of Arjen Robben.

“His footwork, how quick he is, how he manipulated the ball… I’d be very excited if I was Chelsea.”

Fellow pundit Joe Cole was also extremely impressed: “He threatened Liverpool.

“When you can do things like this in the final third, forget the tactics, forget what system you play. When you’ve got a player that can run away from someone… he’s also a goal threat.

“Chelsea have now got two players, including Joao Felix who have come in and can hurt teams.

“He’s making chances, he’s affecting the game. When you’ve got a player like that in your ranks it lifts the crowd. It’s a reason to be positive.

“He had a 35-minute cameo that really excited me.”
