Plymouth residents have to travel an hour to get to nearest blue flag beach

It looks like Plymothians will need to travel a bit further afield this summer to spend the day on one of the South West’s best beaches. Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy has today announced the winners of the prestigious Blue Flag and Seaside Awards for summer 2022 and, unfortunately, no beaches in or around Plymouth made the list.

The Blue Flag is an international award that considers factors such as the quality of water, the facilities it offers, safety, environmental education and management. The prestigious award criteria means visitors arriving at a blue flag beach will know it is considered one of the best in the world.

Plymouth’s closest blue flag approved beach is Blackpool Sands in South Devon which is just under an hour’s drive. It is located in a sheltered bay and privately managed with a Mediterranean feel due to the stunning turquoise water.

The beach has facilities for the whole family including sand pits, a bathing raft, kayaks for hire, a cafe and a beach shop. During the summer season, the beach has lifeguard patrol and a no dog rule.

This year, a total of 56 beaches across the region have been recognized and 36 of them reached the high standard of the blue flag. Having such an award is not only an asset to the beach, but also the surrounding community as it boosts local businesses and tourism.

Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “The success of these beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our blue spaces – from beach managers and volunteers to local residents and businesses. The huge commitment needed to maintain marvelous beaches worthy of these awards cannot be underestimated.

“People who visit a beach flying a Blue Flag or Seaside Award can be assured the beach will be clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as international bathing water quality standards.”
